Ch. 3 · Archive Under

Station Between Stars

Chapter 3

Archive Under

The Archive Under was a library built from light. Shelves of glass held motes that whispered when you passed. Some whispered names. Some whispered apologies. One whispered Lira’s childhood name so softly she almost did not flinch.

Kade noticed. “You heard it.”

“I hear a lot of things I’m paid not to,” she said.

They found the diplomat’s shelf: empty, tagged CONTAMINATED. Beside it, a second tag waited for a package with Lira’s seal number. Someone had prepared this delivery like a trap with good manners.

“If I shelve it here, what happens to the dead recipient?” Lira asked.

“They stay dead,” Kade said. “If you shelve it in a living mind, the dead recipient gets a second shift.”

Lira set the case on the reading table. The clasp asked for her thumb. She did not give it.

“There’s a third option,” she said. “We open it. We read what they wanted buried. We decide if continuity is worth the cost.”

Kade’s face went carefully blank. “Opening sealed memory without a court order is—”

“A courier’s original sin,” Lira said. “I know. But someone is rewriting people. Courts are always late to the rewrite.”

She opened the case.

Blue light unfurled into a scene: a child on a station threshold, holding a smaller case, waiting for a mother who never came back through the glass. The child’s face was Lira’s. The mother’s face was redacted into static.

The memory was not the diplomat’s theft.

It was bait.

“They used my missing piece as packaging,” Lira whispered.

Kade’s hand found his sidearm — not pointed at her, pointed at the dark between shelves, where something that was not a librarian had begun to stand up.

“Then we are not shelving a package,” he said. “We are closing a loop someone else opened.”

Lira closed the case on the light, but not on the knowledge. Somewhere above them, the station announced a train to a star that had not been born yet.

She smiled without humor. “Book me a seat.”
