Station Between Stars

Chapter 1

Thresholds

The station between stars had no platforms. It had thresholds.

Lira Voss learned this the first time she missed her transfer and spent six hours in a waiting room that faced nothing but void. The glass was warm. The void was not empty. If you looked long enough, the dark arranged itself into faces you almost remembered.

She was a courier of sealed memories — not messages, not cargo. Memories: bottled, timestamped, and legally non-transferable except under contract. Her client list included diplomats, dying billionaires, and one quiet order of monks who paid in starlight credits and questions.

Tonight’s package pulsed faintly blue in her case. Recipient: Platform 7, berth of the ship *Night-Accord*. Sender: redacted. Instructions: Do not open. Do not dream near it. Do not accept drinks from anyone who knows your childhood name.

Lira’s childhood name was not public. That was the first problem.

The second problem was the man already waiting at Platform 7, wearing a coat the color of extinguished coal and a smile that had been practiced on worse news.

“Courier Voss,” he said. “I’m Inspector Kade. The *Night-Accord* will not be docking. Its memory is already here.”

He tapped his temple.

Lira did not step back. Couriers who stepped back became stories other couriers told. “That’s impossible.”

“So is a station that remembers you before you arrive,” Kade said. “Yet here we are. Hand me the case.”

“Contract says recipient only.”

Kade’s smile thinned. “The recipient is dead. Or rather, their memory of being alive is in dispute. If you deliver that package, you may complete a murder that has not finished happening.”

Somewhere deep in the station, a departure chime rang for a train that did not exist.

Lira tightened her grip on the case. “Then we have a problem of jurisdiction.”

“No,” Kade said gently. “We have a problem of authorship. Someone is rewriting who people are. And your package is the pen.”
